Sum Pump Control

Power Plant Sump Level Control and pH Monitoring System

A local power plant wanted to monitor the pH, temperature, level and out flow in a remote wastewater sump 600 feet from the control room building. The components used for the application are as follows:

  1. A pH sensor connected to a pH analyzer. The analyzer outputs two 4-20 mAdc signals: one for pH and one for temperature.
  2. A guided wave radar level transmitter outputs a 4-20 mAdc signal based on the water level.
  3. A flowmeter outputs a 4-20 mAdc signal based on the pumped wastewater flow to drain.

The four output signals are connected to a wireless transmitter along with digital control signals to start and stop two pumps along with a status signal for each pump.

The signal is sent 600 feet to a wireless controller and expansion module that is connected to the DCS in the control room.

From the control room, the plant has the ability to actively monitor the sump pH, temperature, water level and flowrate to drain. The DCS can activate the pumps remotely to drain the sump as well as receive a pump running signal over the wireless network.
